Living On Purpose

Reading Plan – Although our fast is ending, our reading plan continues for the year! (realchurchohio.com) and on the Live Notes section of our App, for you to sign up for. This reading plan is designed to take our church through the entire Bible this year. We feel an urgency like never before to make sure the church is reading God’s Word!

Perhaps the most powerful mental health truth I could share with today, as we close out our series together is this[6]  – When you have NO PURPOSE, You will have NO PEACE!

Proverbs 29:18

18 Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law. (ESV)

The word “vision” in this verse refers to a divine communication through a dream, revelation, or prophecy. It denotes supernatural instruction for one’s life! Proverbs 29:18 tells us, that “the people perish” where there is no vision. The word translated “perish” or “cast off restraint” in the original Hebrew means “to loosen”. This is also the same Hebrew word is used in Exodus 32:25 during the golden calf incident: “Moses saw that the people were running wild and Aaron had let them get out of control and became a laughingstock to their enemies”. (People with No Purpose had No Peace!)

*According to Scripture, the most unhealthy mental state is a direction-less life!*

A wise man once said – “The purpose of life is a life of purpose.”

Friedrich Nietzsche – “He who has a why to live for can bear almost anyhow.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson – “The world makes a way for a man who knows where he is going.”

Leadership Guru Bob Goff – “You’ll never be captured by comparison when you’re captivated by purpose.”

Years ago, a little girl asked her mother while she was cooking, “Mom, why do you cut the ends off the meat before you cook it?” The girl’s mother thought for a moment and said, “I think it’s because it adds to the flavor by allowing the meat to better absorb the spices, but I’m not sure, so maybe you should go ask your grandmother because she always did it that way.” So the little girl went to grandma and asked, “Grandma, why do you and Mom cut the ends off the meat before you cook it?” Her grandmother thought for a moment and said “I think it allows the meat to stay tender by soaking up the juices better, but why don’t you ask your Nana, because I learned it from her, and she always did it that way.” The little girl, getting a little frustrated, went to her great grandmother, climbs up on her lap, and asks “Nana, why do you and Mom and Grandma cut the ends off the meat before you cook it?” Her great-grandmother smiled and said, “I’m not sure why they all do it, but I did it because my pot wasn’t big enough to fit the meat.”

We are all driven either by design or default. We either live for a transcendent purpose, or we live according to the demands and traditions that life and others place on us!

But one thing is for sure – You will never live your life On Purpose, By Accident!

John 20:21

21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” (ESV)

According to Jesus, Peace is directly attached to Purpose!

(No purpose, no peace!)

There is no more important truth for us to grasp in this life, than the fact that God is not here for us; we are here for God! We are here for His purposes, not ours! Yes, we may have been hurt and abused. We have experienced trauma. We may battle with negativity and we may wrestle with insecurities, but the single greatest threat to our mental health and peace of mind is living our lives without a divine purpose!

So, when we reduce the intention of God’s miraculous power to just pleasing humans, we are missing it. You and I were created on purpose for a divine purpose! This means that God does not give you His peace so that you’ll just have a better week. He doesn’t just give you His peace so that you’ll have a good night’s sleep. God gives you His peace so that you can go make an impact on this world. He gives us the help we need to get over our humanness, so we can be used by Him for His glory in this short season called life. So when you hear Jesus say to His first disciples, “Peace be with you,” realize that He gave them a job to do and he wanted to lift cares off of them so they could get busy doing kingdom work. He gave his peace for a purpose! God’s peace is not given as an upgrade to our happiness portfolio. He’s not here to diagram a more pleasurable life for us. He gives us His peace so that we can be free to serve, worship, and evangelize. He liberates us from the things that burden our hearts so that we can be freed up for a kingdom mission—which, He knows, will lead us to what we wanted all along. To the only real joy and happiness, we’re capable of experiencing anyway, not as a goal, but simply as a byproduct. The purpose is peace!

In 2002 a book titled The Purpose Driven Life, written by Pastor Rick Warren hit bookshelves and began selling like hotcakes! This book crossed denominational lines, religious lines, and cultural lines. Since 2002 it has sold over 33 million copies, it has been on the New York Times bestseller list for one of the longest periods in history, and is the second most translated book in the world – in 50 Languages!

What is the point of life?  What am I here for?  What is my purpose on this earth?

People desperately need a purpose greater than themselves to give their lives to!

John 15:16

16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. (ESV)

Ephesians 2:10

10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (ESV)

2 Corinthians 5:20

20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. (ESV)

But Jesus didn’t just save us from something, He also saved us for something!

> Christians have become fixated on what they have been saved from! (Testimony!)

> Christians have failed to discover what they we have been saved for! (Destiny!)

– You’ve been created for a purpose!

– You’ve been saved for a purpose!

– You’ve been healed for a purpose!

– You’ve been delivered for a purpose!

Maybe the reason mental un-health is on the rise is because the purpose is on the decline!

Deuteronomy 6:22

22 And the LORD showed signs and wonders, great and grievous, against Egypt and against Pharaoh and all his household, before our eyes. (ESV)

Deliverance is not a Destination, it is a Doorway to our Destiny!

When God brings us out of something, it’s because he’s taking us into something else!

One of the most hotly debated subjects among theologians in church history is the topic of predestination! What role does God’s sovereignty play in the outcomes of man?

John Calvin, who was a firm believer in once saved always saved theology, taught that man’s salvation and purpose have nothing to do with man’s choice. That God pre-chose who would serve him, and man is unable to resist God’s predestined salvation. Joseph Arminian on the other hand, believed that God assigned specific callings based upon his foreknowledge of who would choose to serve him. Arminian taught that God’s grace was indeed powerful, but was still limited by man’s free will. That man could not only resist God’s grace but could also, by their personal choice, lose their salvation!

Wherever you lean theologically, the Bible is clear that we have a predestined purpose!

Ephesians 1:4-5

4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, (ESV)

Romans 8:29-30

29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified. (ESV)

John 15:16

16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. (ESV)

2 huge biblical truths for our mental health:

(1) You were made On Purpose!

King David wrote in: Psalm 139:13,16 (NIV) “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb…16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”

The Lord spoke to Jeremiah in Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart..”

(2) You must live On Purpose!

Acts 13:36 “For when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep…”

Jesus said to his father in John 17:4 “I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.”

Rick Warren -“Living on purpose is the only way to live. Everything else is just existing.”

When people don’t find something significant to do we find something insignificant to do!

What you’ve been saved from, tells you a lot about what you have been saved for!

Divine Purpose is the magnetic pull that makes our tomorrow greater than yesterday!
