Kneeling to Negative Emotions
Def: Emotion – A strong feeling that arises spontaneously.
(Latin – To set in motion.)
Emotions are very unpredictable and set both positive and negative things in motion!
Dallas Willard – “Feelings make great servants, but terrible masters.”
Unknown – “Feelings are just visitors, let them come and let them go.”
The world shouts, “We are our emotions!”. Wisdom shouts, “We are our decisions!”
Since emotions are impulses to act, they must first be approved by truth and wisdom.
> Emotions say hurry, while Wisdom says wait!
> Emotions say speak, while Wisdom says think!
> Emotions say fear, while wisdom says trust!
> Emotions say hate, while Wisdom says forgive!
> Emotions say react, while Wisdom says respond!
We don’t have to be victims of our emotions; we can shape them by the way we think!
An Emotional Person is defined as: “One easily affected with or stirred by emotion; one who displays emotion; one with a tendency to rely on or place too much value on emotion; one whose conduct is ruled by emotion rather than reason.”
15 For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. 17 So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. (ESV)
1 Corinthians 9:27
27 But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. (ESV)
Notice the progression? Paul changed. Paul matured. He went from following his feelings, to commanding his feelings. From kneeling to his emotions, to leading them!
The great tragedy in our society, is that nearly all people mature physically, and most mature mentally, but very few grow up emotionally or spiritually. Immaturity is the norm!
What is emotional maturity? The difference between maturity and immaturity is moral. Without godly character, there will never be maturity! The foundation of all spiritual and emotional maturity is loving others, because God is love! Satan takes, but God gives! Satan hates, but God loves! Satan tears down, but our God builds up!
Emotionally mature people grow from being self-centered to being selfless!
Giving people a piece of your mind and saying whatever you feel is NOT selfless!
Maturity is the ability to discern what is right, and then command our feelings to follow!
– Emotional Maturity Acts First & Feels Second!
– Emotional Immaturity Feels First & Acts Second!
17 So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin. (ESV)
You can’t wait until you feel like forgiving someone to forgive! (Those feelings may never come!) You forgive because it’s right, and your feelings will follow!
You can’t wait until you feel like loving to start loving people! (Those feeling may never come!) You love because you know it’s right, and your feelings will follow!
You can wait until you feel like serving to start serving! (Those feelings may never come!) You start serve people because it is right, and your feelings will follow!
You can’t wait until you feel like being generous to give! (Those feelings may never come!) You give because you know it’s right, and your feelings will follow!
There are too many Christians waiting to feel like it, and nothing is getting done!!!
If I just do what I KNOW, my feelings will FOLLOW!
Our emotions will do two things if we allow them to – Control Us and Control Others!
When we’re controlled by emotions, we try to control others by those same emotions!
Your feelings never just affect you, they also affect everyone who is around you!
There is a fine line between wisdom and fear. Fear often disguises itself as wisdom!
I believe there are 3 indicators that people are following fear instead of wisdom:
1. When our feelings are dominated by anxiety instead of God’s peace!
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. 3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. 4 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; 8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. 9 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. (ESV)
2. When our thoughts are focused on our problems over God’s promises!
6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. (ESV)
8 Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil. (ESV)
1 John 4:18
18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. (ESV)
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. (ESV)
2 Timothy 1:7
7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. (ESV)
3. When our conclusions are determined by man’s opinions over God’s truth!
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. (ESV)
1 Corinthians 2:4-5
4 and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. (ESV)
Wisdom gathers it’s conclusions from heavens resources, not fallible earthly feelings!
17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. (ESV)
Ministry: Offer prayer for people who are kneeling to negative emotions!
